I'm working on a book about the Battle of Harlem Heights (September 16, 1776) for Westholme Publishing's "Small Battles" series. This will be the story of the U.S. Army's first battlefield success and is specifically designed to raise the historical profile of Colonel Thomas Knowlton of Connecticut, who was mortally wounded in that engagement. Knowlton compiled a remarkable military record in support of the Revolution over a period of less than a-year-and-a-half and was chosen by George Washington to lead the army's first intelligence and reconnaissance unit, known as "Knowlton's Rangers.". He is generally considered to be the father of U.S. military intelligence, and an award was created in his honor in 1995 by the Military Intelligence Corps Association. (As an aside, Knowlton's Rangers included Captain Nathan Hale - yes, that Nathan Hale - whom Knowlton selected to undertake the fateful spy mission ordered by Washington.)

I had been working on a manuscript about Thomas Knowlton (in keeping with the focus of my previous literary efforts on unsung Revolutionary War heroes) when Bruce Franklin, the publisher at Westholme Publishing, contacted me. He had read my article, "Thomas Knowlton's Revolution," in the September 2, 2021 issue of the online Journal of the American Revolution (JAR) and asked if I would be interested in writing a book for Westholme's "Small Battles" series about the Battle of Harlem Heights, in which Knowlton lost his life. Bruce agreed to my idea of using this as a vehicle to raise Knowlton's historical profile as well as the battle's, and I agreed to write the book. BTW the Knowlton article in JAR will be republished in April 2022 in its annual hardcover volume that incudes the best articles from the prior year as selected by the editors of JAR.
