Expect a sense of futility. To write well is difficult. To build an audience is difficult. But to think about these things is to change the subject, which ought to be, "How does this story express the deepest longing in our hearts?" If you can focus on that, putting everything else aside -- especially the seeming futility of achieving such an important goal -- you have a chance to write well.

Primarily, by writing. Sure, you have ideas in the shower or scribbled on napkins, but those don't take you far. It's the discipline of sitting down to write and fully submerging into the new reality you are trying to construct that brings inspiration and discovery. Some days (most days?), that's a difficult process.
