I love reading mysteries but have no wish to write one. Plot does not much interest me. In my writing, I prefer to open the door and see who wanders in, integrating them and their stories into the unfolding novel. (In a way I guess I do write mysteries, having no idea when I begin, how it will all turn out.)

My first novel, "An Invitation to the Party" began about ten years ago as a short story. My stories to that point ran 10 to 15 pages but this one, about Garnet's problematic 70th birthday party, took off and kept going (perhaps helped along by my own turning seventy that year).
