I was awake on the couch at 2 a.m. with my son (who was 2 years old at the time) and he didn't want to sleep in his bed. He fell asleep and I was wide awake with a sentence that kept repeating in my head. I thought that if I were to write this sentence down it would alleviate the situation that I was experiencing and I would be rid of it. One sentence turned into two, and two turned into twelve. After thirty minutes of writing I had ten paragraphs and what turned out to be the beginning of my first novel.

Write everything that you can. It does not matter how much or how little you write at a given time. What matters is that you enjoy what you have created. If, at the end of the day, you have not enjoyed what you have written down, do not worry; they are just words, after all.

I enjoy being able to write how I speak and how my mind puts ideas together. In doing so, it feels wonderful to know that there are people that will be entertained and informed by my thoughts.

I listen to music, draw or paint, take a walk, exercise, or spend time in the garden. Anything that I can do to "step away" from what I am currently working on seems to help me find my ideas much sooner than if I just sit there and attempt to generate an idea while staring at a wall of hindrance.
