Mike Nelson His flashlight suddenly flamed out, plunging him into a darkness that was so deep it was palpable. Then somewhere just ahead of him in the abandoned mine shaft, a soft but distinct huff echoed off the stone walls that imprisoned him.
Mike Nelson I would love to be able to do like the main character in my trilogy "Clairvoyant" and be able to hear people's thoughts--see their short-term memories. It would be so cool to be able to sit on a court bench and tell the judge if the defendant is lying his butt off or if he/she is innocent. If the bad people in society were 'found out' instantly I can't help but think this world would be a better place to live.
Mike Nelson How close are we to the world of spirits? Can they have an influence for good or bad in our lives or none at all? At times when I suddenly get a great idea for a book or a passage in a book I'm writing, I often wonder if I had a little inspiration from someone just beyond the sight of my eyes.
Mike Nelson To be totally honest, I've been so busy writing my own books that I have a hard time picking up someone else's work. I go in spurts though. I'll go a long time without reading and then I'll blast through a number of books that garner my interest. I love books that are like those I write: Suspenseful, tender, mysterious, thought-provoking, often resolving a deep conflict in the main character's life. I love twists where I find myself saying "Wow! I never saw that coming"
Mike Nelson First, polish up your language skills. Next pay attention to your daydreams. All my books come from my life experiences embellished by my imagination. I figure if something I experienced in life -- love, hate, terror, anguish, loneliness, humor, relationships, etc -- moved me, then with a little work on the storyline that experience might be interesting to someone else. I'm often told by those who know me best that they often see me in my writing. I think that's to be expected. It's one thing to create fiction based on a life's experience it's quite another thing to try to create lies about something you know absolutely nothing about...
Mike Nelson Writing for me is a passion. I love creating the characters, putting them in a plot, and seeing how they deal with it. Sometimes they head off in the wrong direction and I have to "correct" their direction of travel, but it's all fun. Most importantly, I think, I love it when people who read my stories tell me how the story moved them. I was once told that if you create strong emotion in your readers (good or bad) you've done your job as an author. So far I've been very fortunate. Most of my readers love what I do and are waiting with bated breath for my next book. My only regret is that I waited so long to start publishing...
Mike Nelson I often step away from a project, if I have one going that has me stuck. Then I write a short story -- sometimes nonsensical, but one that gets me thinking and clicking away at the keys again. Then I daydream about the book I'm stuck on--put myself in the story and in my quiet time I usually get answers...
Mike Nelson I have several projects in the 'mix' but I think my major emphasis will be on a sequel to my novel "Vanish". I've had a number of fans ask me to do one.
Mike Nelson I was inspired by a college professor about a hundred years ago who gave me great marks on a short story I had to write for my Freshman Composition class. He told me I should consider journalism as a major. I didn't listen...
Mike Nelson I had a crush on a girl in high school who didn't even know I existed. My Novel "The Invitation" is a fantastical look at what might have been.
