Johnny returns from trick-or-treating and counts 100 pieces of candy in his bag, which he leaves on his bedroom floor. He goes to his closet to find his PJs, and when he returns, the candy is gone, and his Labrador Retriever—who is deathly allergic to chocolate—is wolfing down the final treat, a Hershey’s bar. (Note: this is a true story, and the dog lived.)

When I was a teenager, a thief broke into our family home in the middle of the day when everyone was out. That afternoon, our cat disappeared along with the family silver. We looked everywhere for our black kitty but never saw him again. It was a mystery that made us heartsick, especially my mother. All these years later, I like to think that the thief was a cat lover and that he treated our pet kindly. A cat burglar with a heart.

In Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, Sea of Tranquility, several of the protagonists live in colonies on the moon. Much of the action takes place two hundred years in the future, and I marveled at the description of life under the domes where scientists create the illusion of earth-like skies, atmosphere, and bodies of water. It was comforting to think that the human race will figure out how to escape this planet we have put in jeopardy. In the novel, characters travel between the earth and the colonies on airships or via time travel. I’d like to give either one of those modes of transportation a whirl.

My friend, Tracey Lange, is coming out with her second novel—The Connellys of County Down—so that’s at the top of the list. Also, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver...The Latecomer by Jean Hanff Korelitz...The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai and The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave and Reef Road by Deborah Goodrich Royce.
