I didn't know what to do with it and it sat idle for a decade. One day I visited the CIA online reading room - that's a seriously nutty place and it sparked a series of what-if questions that led me back to the neglected story

Make writing part of your routine so that it becomes a habit and write for yourself first and foremost. It takes real courage to submit and/or publish your work. Not everyone will like what you write - that's OK, keep writing there's an audience there for you.

Writing really is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. The germ of an idea can come at any time. Exploring that and getting it down on paper is the hard bit. There's always a temptation to "leave it until tomorrow." That doesn't work.
The only way I can write wIth any proficiency is to set myself a time to write every day.
Ideally, I want to write 1000 words daily. That isn't always possible but it's something to shoot for. Once I get on a roll, the words tend to flow.
