Hey! The versions are the same. The only difference is in the YA versions, it's either fade-to-black, or wayyyyy toned down (kissing only) or the scene is just skipped entirely.

Hi Nicki! I'm so sorry I'm only just seeing this question! I usually recommend people start with Salt and read through the main series (Salt, Sand, Soul, Paz, Passage, Prologue) before moving on to the prequels (Scourge & Seed, Savage, The Lost Years.) This way you go through the timeline and meet the characters and get their backstories in the way I intended :)
You could also start with Savage, as it was written to be another entrypoint to the series, and then you could continue from there through Lost Years and the main series.
I have a couple of other recommended reading orders on my website, such as reading them in the order they were written, or reading them chronologically (i.e. starting with the prequels.) The series makes sense when read in either of these ways, but I'd say these orders are more intended for folks who have already read the series once.
