Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Martha Conway My neighbor once told me, very off-hand, "Well you know, my son cannot lie." And it was true; I'd often noticed how her son went to great lengths to try to tell the exact truth. I thought: what a great seed for a character! And what if that character is forced to lie? And then break the law? How would that affect her?

How do you get inspired to write?

Martha Conway I get inspired by other great writers—or rather, their books. I also read a lot of first-hand journals and journalism from whatever period I've set my novel. Those always give me ideas.

What are you currently working on?

Martha Conway I'm working on a book set in antebellum America, on the Ohio River, which was the natural boundary between the North and the South. A costume designer on a riverboat theatre gets caught up in the Underground Railroad.
