There are several reasons that led me to write a halal romance.
First, I've always been genuinely curious about how Muslims find a match “in the wild.” Around me, most people get married through arrangements or blind dates set up by moms and their friends. But every now and then, you hear of more unexpected stories where couples first met each other at Yemeni cafés or in a random public setting! Instead of just wondering how those stories unfolded, I realized I could create my own version, but make it more cross-cultural and transcontinental.
The second reason is to show that staying true to your identity, especially in modesty and faith, can still get you a good catch, even if they seem out of reach or an impossible match. I wanted to be inspirational, especially to the current generation.
Third, I wanted to write a love story that didn’t center around teenagers. Mira is 27, and Zayd turns 30 in the book. Their connection is both realistic and relatable in its pacing, timing, and the way things unfold, as well as deeply mature, which, in its own way, is actually kind of sexy hehe
