The Kindle version was released first. When that happens and Amazon doesn't have a physical book to use for page numbers, they set the length based on how many page turns they think a reader will need to do to complete it. Even when it was listed as 903 pages, on my Kindle at the font size I used, every page turn was the equivalent of two pages.
When I added the paperback edition, the story only had 574 pages. It takes a bit, but eventually Amazon will adjust the Kindle number to be within a few pages of the paperback. Or if after so many people have read it, they will adjust it to the average number of pages turned.
I didn't get to set the number of pages on the Kindle edition. The story hasn't changed at all. I didn't take anything out.
