All of my ideas in some fashion or another are informed by my 33 years in law enforcement and my time after that in the security and investigations business. Of course the stories are fiction-ed up with name and setting changes, etc., but the impetus is always based on something factual that happened.

This is not original and I can't remember who I heard it from: Crack open a book in the same genre, anywhere in the middle, and start reading a few pages. It helps distract me from whatever was hindering progress, then get back to writing.
