I wrote Haiku and Senryu: A Simple Guide for All because I've taught so many workshops to adults and students through the years, and they gave me ideas about writing a how-to book. I saw the difficulties they had with writing and publishing haiku, and since I've had experience writing other how-to-writing guides, I knew I could write this one.

I carry a notebook with me wherever I go. I record thoughts, whether happy or sad. Sometimes nature inspires me, or something that someone said to me. Most thoughts have some potential for writing something.

The best thing about being a writer is the feeling that your words are creating a reaction in other people, and that they will inspire others to write.

I force myself to sit down everyday and write, even if it's just a page. If I do this, I find I write more than just one page. I tell myself that it doesn't matter if what I write is really rough and if it doesn't really say too much content-wise. I can always revise it. The important thing is to just get something down on paper.
