Michelle Simkins It's hard to point to one thing and say THAT'S the thing that inspired this story, but I can identify some of the pieces. For one thing, I've always been fascinated by fairy tales, and I often wonder about what comes AFTER the happily ever after. I am also pretty obsessed with plants, and roses are one of my favorites: and my appreciation for them extends to their thorns. I think a lot about the way our culture often associates them with romance, though they are in reality also fierce and capable of causing injury if we don't approach them with caution. Somehow my hours pruning roses and my musing about the aftermath of the sleeping beauty tale stewed in my imagination along with my own animist worldview until the premise of Briar unfolded in my brain. I didn't intend for the roses to become the center of the story at first, but sometimes a tale has its own agenda, and Briar definitely did.
