I find an idea I'm obsessed with, whether it's a concept or a specific circumstance or a character, and I built a story that somehow makes that kernel, that thing I'm obsessed with, happen.

Perhaps a strange answer, but on a few occasions I have found reading something really terrible, like a crappy novel or a story with "potential" that's not fully realized, is the perfect inspiration. You say "Wait, that person got a publishing deal on that piece of crap? I can do better!"

When you realize you've created something out of nothing. This is especially rewarding when you're talking about characters who become "real" as you write them and eventually just begin to talk on their own. Then you realize, somehow you "birthed" this character.

Write. Just write. Don't judge yourself on it being too short, too stupid, not good enough, or anything else. Plow ahead. Do what feels good. Eventually you will get to a place where you are happy and not so hard on yourself. Just believe.

I have three novels "in process" and all came from very different places. For one book, I was inspired by one of my favorite bands, Einstuerzende Neubaten. For another, it was the idea of a world without sex or sexual desire. And for one of them, I have been prompted by what I saw as an obvious "loose end" in an existing story arc.
