A Southern gothic novel titled "The Book of Earl." It's a morality tale about an eccentric young man, Earl Verdin--mentally challenged, physically gifted, who speaks with God and his dead mother--who lives feral in the swamps. One day on a ramble, he stumbles upon a young woman being set upon by cretins meaning her great harm. He saves her and for twisted and complicated reasons she accuses him on the crime. Railroaded by a good-ole-boy justice system, Earl is sent on a harrowing, picaresque journey of sacrifice and suffering that wends through the corridors of a violent prison and echoes in the unsettled heart and conscience of a young woman at war with her better nature.

I avoid it entirely...:) Seriously, I've found that if you make a schedule and stick to a schedule the pages tend to pile up. And if you hit a spot where you're suddenly stuck, you can go back and start revising what you've done so far. I find that a) that gets my mind out of that rut and b) assuming I'm reasonably happy with my draft pages it gives me confidence in my idea and the optimism required to keep going.
