Keith Rosson Ew, both. I like my characters morally gray and brimming with flaws, makes things a lot more interesting.
Keith Rosson Thanks, Chad! That changes every day, but I can list SOME of my faves off the top of my head: American Steel, the Avengers, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, the Clash, the Detonators, Fugazi, the Gits, Hot Water Music, the Instigators, Jawbreaker, J Church.
Keith Rosson You know, I read Silence of The Lambs when I was teenager, maybe in my early twenties, and I remember that and Red Dragon being really good, but I wouldn't consider it an influence unless it's reallllll subconscious. And while I love joe Hill's work and think he's absolutely fantastic, Horns is the only thing of his I have left to read.
Keith Rosson Sure am! And almost everything I write is either set in Portland or the Oregon coast. Place is so important to me, and there's just no way I could fudge my way through pretending to know what Akron, Ohio or Brooklyn is like with any degree of confidence. In this case as least, I gotta write what I know.
Keith Rosson The novel I'm currently editing with my agent was actually started as a series of prompts, literally pulled out of a hat, in my old writing group. It started as a short story a few yeas ago and slowly expanded. Now it's 95K words and tickles my ear at night when I try to sleep.
Keith Rosson Write as often as you can - it gets easier, and your voice will become your own. Read a lot; every book you read, the ones you like and ones you don't, inform you. Submit your work. Accept critiques without argument. Write some more. Support other authors - their successes expand the literary world as a whole.
