Not pestering! But unfortunately I don't have a great answer for you. I majored in history and Spanish, and my first job out of school was teaching preschool. I only did grant writing later, as a part-time gig for a small nonprofit who paid me as a contractor. I never want to suggest doing work for free, but if you can find a way to get some experience under your belt as a freelancer while making ends meet doing something else, that's probably your (unfair) best bet.
That said: With the degrees I mentioned, I now write YA and my spouse (history degree) builds treehouses for a living. So don't be afraid to branch into areas that seem like unrelated longshots. Writing skills are valuable in every industry -- and they're not your only skills.
