Great, thanks. Ava might have started with bits and pieces of real life people guiding her, but by the time I go through several drafts characters really do take over and become a unique individual. It's one of the things I love about the writing process. That said I think a little bit of me always resides in all the characters!

I teach a creative writing workshop. Very ironic, tonight is the class on writer's block. There are a lot of techniques to shake you out of it. The most important one is to allow your early drafts to be messy. Trying to get it perfect on the first draft will only create a block. You have to make mistakes. The great news is-- all mistakes can be fixed.

I had taken a trip to Barcelona with a group of girls. Even though we were in our thirties, there were times when the group dynamics became bullying and high school-ish. I was having such an awful time in such a beautiful place. I began thinking of complex female relationships knowing I'd want to set a future story in Spain.
