Don't necessarily go with the most prestigious house or highest offer for your first novel. You've taken decades to get there none of them could ever know about and it's tempting to romanticize that moment you arrive. Find out what editors really think about what you've done. And do have a weather eye on giving them something commercial. You want to earn your hand on the tiller. And sometimes that means taking less upfront so you can trust the deal.
