Mary Zisk "The Art of Being Remmy" was inspired by the most exciting event in my young life—at the age of 13, I was a winner in a WABC Radio Draw The Beatles art contest. With the other winners, I received Beatles concert tickets from disc jockey Big Dan Ingram at the New York Worlds Fair. Then, on August 29, 1964, my best friend Dana (who was in NO way like Debbie) and I screamed our way through the Beatles singing at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, New York.

I was born to be an artist. But unlike Remmy’s father, my parents fully supported my talents and I started oil painting lessons at age 9 with a neighborhood mom. My art classes through middle school and high school introduced me to pen and ink, watercolor, printmaking, sculpture, even jewelry making. I’m fortunate I grew up in a town that was committed to the arts.

Historical note: Like Remmy, I naively thought I would meet the Beatles at the concert, since I was a big winner. But no such luck. 28 years later, however, I was on a painting vacation in England and I bumped into PAUL MCCARTNEY on a street and shook his hand. See? Dreams do come true!
