I'm reading a lot of history fiction right now, which is a new area for me. Warrior of Rome by Harry Sidebottom (I bet he can't get on Facebook either with his name anymore that I can!), The Evening of the World by Allan Massie and Golden Lion by Wilbur Smith.

Read above your writing level. Push the boundaries of your reading and it'll strengthen your writing. Write a little every day. Keeping a journal is a good way to start. Write to get to know yourself first and then write to say something to others. But most of all, read up--not down.

I've only had it once. I tried just about everything. In the end, I took the advice of a songwriter who said just write one sentence a day. I did that until I got through the block. I now believe that writer's block signals a transition phase of moving from writing for pleasure to writing for purpose. It's healthy so don't worry but take your time.
