I too write crime fiction and use the landscape of East Anlia (which I know well) as a backdrop to events. The wide open spaces and ancient buildings add atmosphere How do you come up with plots for your novels? I am trying to build a following on Goodreads and would be thrilled if you would become a follower/friend.
Susan Parry Hi Wendy, happy to befriend a fellow author - my plots tend to reflect what is going on in the area, for example 'Grand Depart' was based on the Tour de France that passed through the Dales, 'Killer Lines addresses the problem of recreational drugs; I have included poisoned raptors and badger baiting in my storylines - all ideas coming from real events locally. I often use the internet to trigger ideas. So where do you get your inspiration from?

What books are on your summer reading list this year?
Susan Parry Just finished a couple of Stephen Booth's series set in the Derbyshire Dales and Julia Chapman's 'Death in the Dales' (the Yorkshire ones that is) which is a light read for the summer..

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Susan Parry Not normally an issue - my problem is finding time to write. I have plenty of ideas but not enough hours in the day when I am compos mentis!

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Susan Parry This is a really difficult question. I love meeting readers who enjoy my books and are looking forward to the next one. That's probably the best thing.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Susan Parry Get up early, go to bed late, write every day and keep going. It is going to be hard work. When the first book is done, start the next. One is not enough!

What are you currently working on?
Susan Parry I have just had my seventh novel published so I am enjoying a little break before starting the next. I enjoy catching up on my reading between writing and have 'The Goldfinch' and 'The Life of Pi' on my shelf.

How do you get inspired to write?
Susan Parry I live in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in the most unspoilt part of England. My crime novels are set in the area, so I only have to look out of my window - and keep an eye on what is current in the Dales: sheep rustling, raptor poisoning, cycle racing....

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Susan Parry That's an easy one - everyone in Yorkshire is aware that the Tour de France starts in Yorkshire this Saturday, 5th July. My novel 'Grand Depart' is set in the Yorkshire Dales on the route of the cycle race in the run up to the event. Cyclists are involved.....
