“I'm happy to take any questions about either of my books. My mind is mostly focused on my latest novel, Man in the Mirror, but Torn by God is fair game too. ”

I generally get inspired by something that disturbs me or something I want to understand, generally about humans and how they are and what makes them how they are. I must admit I love humans. Not what they do, sometimes. The terrible things they do. But in general, I like to think about how we've come to be who we are in all our diversity.

I've got another novel in mind . . . peculating away. I know what it's about. I know who my protagonist(s) is. Not ready to say much more than that. I'll let you know, when I know more.

The best thing about being a writer is that it's so darn fun to write. I love everything about it, and I don't care if the book takes ten years to write (well, yes, this last one did take ten years to write), there will come a day when the story will tell me it's done. And that day is the same day I know that I've learned everything the story has to teach me about the subject, about the characters and the plot, and about writing. Then it's time to give it a good shove out into the world, and get on with the next one.

I never ever have writer's block. Writer's block is caused by trying to write the story in your head before you get started. My approach is just get my characters walking, and see where they take me. I know up front what I'm writing about, and some of who my characters are, but the refinement of all that comes later with multiple drafts. If you know that you're going to be changing your words again and again as you learn more about your characters and your plot and the best way to tell the story, then it won't be so precious and you can just write!!!

My father had Alzheimer's. I wanted desperately to know what it was like for him, so after he died, I spent seven years of my life, writing every day, living in the mind of my protagonist, Aaron Young, slowly, but surely, finding my way deep into the heart and mind of a man with Alzheimer's.
