The shadow drifted over the top of her as she swam along the seafloor - sinuous, graceful but with an undeniable shape and power. Her heart crashed beneath her wetsuit as she looked up to see the shape turn, heading toward her with the speed of an atomic missile, serrated teeth in a maniacal grin...

Venice - 15th century. To the house of Nicholas de Fleury, the merchant. I would learn the art of trading fine imports - spices, silks, fine art - and balancing on the knife edge of political rivalries of the time.
Based on the fictional life of de Fleury, in The House of Niccolo by Dorothy Dunnett

Tobias is a minstrel in Book Two of The Gisborne Trilogy - Book of Knights. He is a very engaging little person. In Book Three - Book of Kings, he shows a little more depth and seemed to be worming his way to a prominence in my mind. My editor said to me that he felt Tobias had a story and that I should really think about that.
The truth turned out to be that Tobias told me he had a story to tell and I think I am merely his vehicle and what a story! It is epic - spreading across the Mediterranean and into Constantinople. I hope it will be published in July. Fingers crossed.

Tough question. And on reflection, a very simple answer. I write because I want to. On the days I don't want to, I don't because the writing would show that.

I put the work aside and go for a walk with the dogs on the beach, go for a kayak, embroider - anything to take me away from the problem. Then I return a day of so later and read the chapter again and sink myself into it and invariably words start to flow.
