I used to live not far from Maldon in Essex, I knew about the Battle of Maldon in 991AD and the famous Anglo-Saxon poem that describes Byrhtnoth's heroic death. He was old at the time and I started to wonder how he became this famous warrior. Little is known about his early life, so I invented it.
