I started with the fairytale pairing of a witch and her cat companion, and played around with it. What if the cat was the one with the power? What if they had to keep that secret? What if the witch was young? What if I didn't even use words like witch and magic, but made up new terms unique to that world? What if the magic involved something you'd never associate with a cat--such as immersion in water?
Out of that grew a story of a sixteen-year-old girl and her sharp-tongued cat friend, working as sort-of con artists in a canal-laced city surrounded by swamp.
