Hmmm. Are you a writer or aspiring scribe looking for a plot for your own book? Even so, here's a straight answer: While serving in the US Army in South Korea, my Korean-born wife, a US citizen, without my knowledge or consent colluded with a Hong Kong-based Indian national to (attempt) to smuggle what ROK Customs said was $1 million worth of diamonds through my Army post office box. The Indian in question showed up at my base and demanded the package that I had earlier that day signed for and left unopened in my quarters. Naturally, I refused. He was arrested. My wife was arrested. I was arrested. My brother-in-law was arrested. Through the efforts of a good lawyer, I got my family out of jail and allowed corrupt officials to confiscate the stones in exchange for our freedom. The mystery: What was the Indian going to do with those diamonds? Would he attempt to sell them a few at a time, or did he have one well-heeled buyer? The Customs police seemed to think it was the latter, and tortured me to tell them his name. Naturally, I couldn't, so they beat me some more. My ex-wife has passed on. The Indian died in prison. Who was the buyer? And how could my former wife have been stupid enough to get involved in such a scheme?

Hi Joel David,
Thanks for your kind words about Family Blood. Stuart Woodman died in prison last year. Ditto Robert Homick, in 2014. LAPD Detectives both retired and living in Orange County. Prosecutor Pat Dixon died two years ago. Mike Dominguez is still in prison, as his the younger Homick, Melody Woodman remarried and is the sales manager of a Cadillac dealership.

Downstairs neighbor Salvatore Contreras has been involved with author Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawki far longer and more intimately than any other man in Paretsky's excellent and long-running mystery/thriller series. Not that their relationship is erotic; retired but still strong and muscular, Sal serves as V.I.'s surrogate father. When she staggers home bruised or bloody, he patches her up, nurses her back to health (with the help
of a few other recurring characters), serves as local security for her household, even straightens her apartment now and then, and most importantly, cares for the two endearing dogs whose love they share. While there is not even a hint of sex between them--V.I. gets those needs
fulfilled by a small procession of more appropriate men, most of whom conveniently travel frequently for their careers. Sal is often a pivotal
figure in V.I.'s adventures, if only in small ways. They will have no offspring together, but Sal and V.I. are definitely a power couple, intimate in all the ways that close neighbors and good friends can be. Between the pages of Paretsky's books, where you find one, the other is never far away.

I was approached by a retired Secret Service agent who had been trying to write about his experiences as a Green Beret in Vietnam for more than 30 years, and wasn't getting anywhere. So he asked me to become his partner. This has happened to me several times, and usually I decline. This time I sensed a really good story. I've been proved right by dozens of reviews and an award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Two things. A mystery novel about a couple of ARMY CID agents (second in a series) and a screenplay based on my last book, Abandoned In Hell, The Fight For Vietnam's Firebase Kate.

Don't quit your day job. It's very hard to make a living as a writer. I've been very fortunate to have worked steadily for 50 years, but the truth is if I hadn't been able to scrape together a down payment and buy a house in 1974, when I got out of the Army, I would never have been able to survive as a self-employed scribe. The value of California real estate has gone up with few interruptions for a hundred years, and owning property gave me a way to borrow money when I needed it. I needed it a lot.

Being able to create something--a book, an article, a poem--from nothing, and getting paid for it.

I don't think there is such a thing. When I find myself a little stymied, I just lower my usual standard and write. Later, I'll go back and fix it, make it better.
