When I was 21 years old I hitchhiked from Los Angeles to Detroit. The longest ride I got was from Barstow to St. Louis with a fugitive. He wanted me to drive during the day while he hid in the backseat. Nothing happened--he even bought be breakfast at a truck stop, but it could fit in a novel. From St. Louis, I was picked up by a guy in a big red (I think) Cadillac convertible. The driver was Sonny Liston! He dropped me off at Gary, Indiana toll road. The rest of the way was pretty mundane.
