I wish I could, but I have a horror of horror stories and movies... Even my middle-grade Halloween story, The Curse of the Corpse Bride, is gentle and family friendly!

I would love to go to author Jenny Colgan’s Scotland—one locale would be the Scottish Highlands in her novel, The Bookshop on the Corner, and the other would be her Island of Mure, in her Island series, off the coast of Scotland. I would love to hike the hills, read Nina’s book picks (from the Bookshop book), and eat lots of her heroine Flora’s baking on Mure!

Summer reading time always competes with the many hours I spend in the garden each day, but right now, I'm re-reading Liane Moriarty's "Three Wishes" and loving it! On my list are some new authors I just discovered: Roisin Meaney's "One Summer" looks really intriguing, as does Carmel Harrington's "The Life You Left." I'm also planning to re-read "Recipes for a Perfect Marriage" by Kate Kerrigan, which I read many years ago. As you see, I'm a big fan of Irish women's fiction!

That's a tough one! My first thought was Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, but on some level they were very unhappy and as we know their story wasn't exactly a happily ever after. So I'm going to go with Mary Katherine and Sergeant Mike Flannigan from the book Mrs. Mike. They truly loved each other through many difficulties, even after losing their toddler and newborn baby to diphtheria. Their story ended with hope. I haven't read the book since I was young, but I never forgot my crush on sergeant Mike!

I think of writer's block as not knowing or not being able to decide where your story is going next. When I'm stuck, I shut off my laptop. I'll go out into the garden and pull weeds, or bake some cookies, and let my subconscious work the problem for me. Then when I return to my computer, I usually have a solution!

My latest book, a middle-grade chapter book called The Secret Astoria Scavenger Hunt, was inspired by several sources: some childhood memories, a newspaper clipping about a ghost sighting, and my fondness for the small riverside town of Astoria, Oregon. I'm also a big fan of The Goonies movie, and had a great time visiting Astoria during the 2015 Anniversary Celebration!
