Steve Johnson Gotta remove myself from the situation. Get up and away from the screen. I go outside and hike or head out on the bike or lean against a tree and watch clouds drift by. It knocks down the block and a lot of times I return with an unexpected creative burst.
Steve Johnson The big money and hordes of fans?

I really like those moments when it all gels and that word fits in that place with that thought and the whole thing is so crazy good I let out giggles of creative domination over the world (or at least that chapter).
Steve Johnson Don't ever stop. Read a lot. Write about anything, find your voice, and don't ever stop.
Steve Johnson My first children's book, The Big Bog, is out and with a great first reception. I'm working on promoting that, with big plans to turn it into a series. I also have a statewide guidebook to hiking Minnesota's waterfalls in the works. Look for that in Fall of '17 or Spring '18.
Steve Johnson I think the outdoors inspires me most. I've been to places razor's-edge dangerous, heartbeat quiet and peaceful, and shout-it-from-the-rooftops glorious. It's tough for me to walk away from any of that without a bushel of buzzing inspiration. Moments, too, can do the same thing. A ten-second, spontaneous dance of a pair of oak leaves, tip to lobe. In-the-clouds joy. Heartbreak, victory, teaching, learning. Writing saves those moments for me, fires me up for what's next, or helps release me from a troubling place.
Steve Johnson For me, being Out There lends itself to creation, exploration, discovery, and sometime just the plain ol' accidental fun of getting lost in the woods and finding a whole new world. Never is this more evident and influential than to the curious and tireless mind of a kid. My son and daughter showed this to me in grand style on a hike in our favorite forest up in northern Wisconsin. Their day of adventuring and learning sparked the idea for the book.
