I'm going to go with the couple who never really became a couple, from The Bridges of Madison County. Should I have looked instead to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, Romeo and Juliet, or gosh, Tristan and Iseult, for a tragic model from the literary canon? Doesn't matter. I vote with my heart, and "sentimental" as Waller's book might have been (Wikipedia, citing critics), the book was a 3-year bestseller for a reason: pure powerful and convincing human emotion tied in that most heartwrenching of knots, the insolvable triangle in an unforgiving society.
