In 2018 my family and I lost my Auntie Dawn to cancer. It was really hard on all of us and that experience inspired the character Kit Barrows, who is struggling with grief of her own after the loss of her wife to cancer. I didn't quite know what to do with her, though, until I was trying to write a short story for a writing contest during quarantine in 2020 with specific narrative requirements. She fit with the story perfectly!
I missed the contest deadline (oops) and the short story eventually became a novella... and boom! Elaine's Gift.

Well, I'm always working on my non-fiction freelance stuff. You can take the girl out of journalism but you can't take journalism out of the girl, I guess. But in terms of fiction... right now I'm working on my first FULL-LENGTH novel! It's... it's going. It's fine, we're fine!

Movies, TV shows, and other books. I recently started working on my fantasy novella again for the first time in a LONG time, after finishing a really great fantasy novel written by a friend of mine. Music is another big one--if a song comes on that gives me "pirate vibes" the laptop is immediately open.

One of my favourite pieces of advice I've ever received was from my favourite childhood movie, Kiki's Delivery Service. When Kiki loses her powers, Ursula suggests that she simply take a break, put it out of her mind for a while and focus on other things.
"Stop trying. Take long walks. Look at scenery. Doze off at noon. Don't even think about flying. And then, pretty soon, you'll be flying again. We each need to find our own inspiration, Kiki. Sometimes it's not easy."
