I've been a hospice volunteer since 2010. Early on, one question kept nagging at me: why were people coming to hospice care so late in the course of their illness? A reporter by training, I started researching that. And that led to asking questions about a number of interwoven issues: how are physicians and nurses educated about end-of-life issues? Are there better alternatives to conventional skilled nursing homes for long-term care? What are the unique challenges of minority and LGBT people? What is the impact of public policy decisions about palliative and hospice care. In short, can we do this better? (The short answer is yes, we can.)
