I was researching the history of my father-in-law's ship during WWII (USS Patterson DD392). As part of this research, I accessed many ship deck logs of the Patterson and many other US Navy ships. At some point, I happened onto a ship's log for January 1 and found that the midwatch entry (0000 to 0400) contained a poem rather than the usual deck log minutia. This discovery prompted research into why such an entry existed and as we say, "The rest is history"
