J.R. Martin My most recent short story came from the idea of exploring synesthesia and wondering what it could do if it were operating at an extreme level. That led to a story called "A Student's Syn." I have a tendency to add my real-life experiences into a story as well, but I am somewhat subverted.
J.R. Martin I actually get my ideas from my dreams or random thoughts that pop in my head. I always keep a journal nearby to write my dream and use that as an impetus for a story. Quotes can inspire me as well.
J.R. Martin I'm working on The Engineer's Dilemma, the sequel to The Engineer's Apprentice. It's coming along very well and beta readers are saying it's going to be amazing.
J.R. Martin I'll be cliche. Write. Write. When you're done writing, write some more.
J.R. Martin Creating new worlds and following where the story goes. Yes, we steer the story, but sometimes it can surprise you. It's really nice to be able to branch down a path that some writers would choose to ignore.
J.R. Martin Great question. I do stream-of-consciousness writing. I sit at my computer, open a blank document, and write whatever is on my mind. Sometimes, it's just gibberish, and sometimes, it's a new story, but thirty minutes of that usually solves the problem.
J.R. Martin When I awoke, I saw that the dream still had a hold of me. The truth hit me like a hammer: I'd become the nightmare's dream, and it was using my body to wreak havoc on the world.
J.R. Martin This is tough. I'd want to go somewhere strange and be in on the strangeness. Being in Stephen King's America and knowing there are strange things going on and trying to solve them would be amazing.
J.R. Martin Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams was a must-read for me this summer.
J.R. Martin That's a good question. I don't have a lot of mysteries in my own life. I am curious about my grandfathers' histories. They both seem to have had very interesting lives and I'm curious what they were really like.
