David Z. Pyke I knew I wanted to write stories set in Texas in the era just after the revolution, but I wanted a high-concept hook to launch the series. I was driving on Central Expressway in Dallas when the title Rescuing Crockett popped into my head.
David Z. Pyke Read and write. I know that sounds simple, but it’s the only way. Classes help, but the best teacher is experience. You do something often enough, you will get better. I started writing professionally when I was 15, covering kids and church-league basketball games for a free newspaper. That’s about as small-time as it gets, but you learn every time you write.
David Z. Pyke My second novel, the second book in the Silas Grant series.
David Z. Pyke My background is in journalism, which doesn’t care if you’re inspired and doesn’t care about your best writing environment or what time of day you do your best writing. You just write, right now. I still do a lot of writing in my day job, so it’s less about inspiration and more about finding time to write and research and market and do all the not-so-glamourous things that go into publishing a book. The inspiration for my subject is from my heritage and personal interests.
