The idea came years ago whilst watching Das Boot and I wondered how things would change on a U-boat crew if a woman was on board. Answer, very little, it was a strict regime.
That was the start my characters took over and went down a path I hadn't anticipated, they almost write themselves. Now considering War Torn Book 3.

Jan Lloyd I walk in the forest every morning and do a great deal of thinking about my characters there. I quite often hot seat them, playing a scene in my head, taking on the persona of one character, and then replay it as the other character.
Jan Lloyd If I get a block I leave the chapter I am working on and move to a different place in the book. You don't have to work chronologically, the work isn't set in stone, so if you are stuck in one place, jump around a bit. Often your ideas change and you can go back to the bit you were stuck on and write it from a totally different perspective.
