Kevin Rush Hi, Nico. I don't remember exactly. It's been many months. I just remember clicking something to say "This is not my book," then going back and clicking "This is my book." Something like that. Sorry I can't be much help. Good luck.
Kevin Rush I read great writers.
Kevin Rush Wandering aimlessly and staring into space is part of the job.
Kevin Rush I'm polishing a romantic comedy novella, The Wedding Routine. It's about a Celia Cleary, champion ballroom dancer who makes her meager living choreographing wedding dances, but whose own romantic life is a disaster, until she meets a handsome French chef who resolutely refuses to dance. Coming in November, so follow me for updates.
Kevin Rush I do something other than writing. Exercise, long walks, prayer, and time with friends often dislodges whatever's in the way. Reading sometimes is helpful. Good literature is stimulating and encouraging. But with that I've got to be careful, because I don't want to unconsciously steal an idea or change my narrative voice midstream under someone else's influence.
Kevin Rush I think there are three points I'd emphasize: 1. Read great writers. 2. Seek out new experiences that broaden your horizons. 3. Learn to love solitude. You'll be spending a lot of time there.
Kevin Rush Since it's now October, I'll talk about last summer. I wanted to see whether books that had been made into successful movies were still worth reading. So, I read The Exorcist, Rebecca, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Starship Troopers, Fight Club, Frankenstein, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Natural, The Desperate Hours, and The Road. I'm writing up my thoughts and will share them in a series of blog posts later.
Kevin Rush Whenever I hear this question, I can't help but think of David Mamet's answer. "I think of them." When the student challenged him to be more specific, he said, "I think of them in my head." It's my opinion that if you look at the world around you, you have the choice to either be dispirited or inspired. If you're looking for inspiration, it's there in abundance.
