As a peace activist, I thought more people should know about this inspiring peacemaker from Africa - a role model for the world, and a kind of Muslim Gandhi figure. He is a proponent of peace and social change through nonviolence. He was imprisoned, exiled and kept under house arrest for decades simply for speaking the truth. He had a tremendous impact for change in his country of Senegal without ever picking up arms.

Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba's life inspires many. I happened to be writing an introduction for someone else's book about Bamba's spiritual order, the Muridiyyah. I had collected so much information on Bamba that I had piles and boxes of notes, booklets, and books. It seemed there was nothing else to do but write a book on him! Over the years the impetus to complete the book kept me going. But also I truly thought people could benefit greatly from knowing about Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba, especially in these troubling times, reeling from violence.
