Katherine Pritchett Where did I leave my glasses? For real. But truthfully, what if is the basis for all my stories as well as mysteries. What if this instead of that? What if Kennedy had not been assassinated? What if disaster had occurred instead of the moon landing? What if waste from nuclear power plants is intercepted by terrorists? Look for that one in a future book.
Katherine Pritchett I'm trying to complete a romance (Love's Crossroads) I started years ago for a friend who was a paramedic striking out in the love game. She joked that maybe I could write her a mate. He's a surgeon, but they don't see eye to eye. I quit writing this one when I got a divorce and picked it back up as I healed, then had to put it away when my fiance died of leukemia. I used those dark feelings to write What the River Knows. Then I got back into Crossroads, hoping I could write my own happily-ever-after. It worked!! Now I just have to finish it.
Katherine Pritchett You are never "not writing." You see things differently than normal people, slightly above and to the left. For instance, I was at the mall getting a beauty makeover when my makeup artist froze and stared at something outside the shop in the mall for a fraction of a second. I have no idea what she saw, but I think that moment is going to become a Russian immigrant makeup artist seeing a hit man for the Russian mob who is stalking the customer in her chair in Convergence, book three in the Richard and Terra saga.
Katherine Pritchett I usually change up what I'm doing. Go do something with my hands, like mow the yard. When I got a release date for What the River Knows, I ran the weedeater around my yard. Now that I'm stuck on my work in progress, Love's Crossroads, I'm cutting down a dead tree in my yard. As usual, it's way beyond my skill level, but it gives me some insights and plot twists. And sawdust in my hair.
Katherine Pritchett Write. Join a writer's club or critique group (or several). Make writing a regular routine, but also be open to writing outside that routine. Read a lot. Beta read for others. Judge writing contests (helps you see what you do wrong and right). Write. Revise. Re-write. Edit. Write more. Set your work aside for a while and work on something else. Then go back and revise what you set aside. And revise it again.
Katherine Pritchett Sometimes I read or see something and think, "What if--" Other times, I notice a connection and want to illustrate that. I read a lot, walk my dog (or he walks me). And sometimes I just sit on the porch and watch birds and trees. See my blog post about writing: http://katherinepritchett.com/?p=247 Writers are never "not writing." Ideas simmer, characters whisper, and circumstances connect.
Katherine Pritchett A woman was murdered in the town I lived in nearly 40 years ago. She was an acquaintance of my neighbor and my ex-husband helped with the investigation. To date, the murder is unsolved.
