Paul Dore To deal with writer's block, I back away from my desk and do something else. My brain needs time to process things, and the worst thing I can do is try and force creativity. Usually, by changing focus - go for a walk, eat something, etc. - the answer comes to me.
Paul Dore The best thing about being a writer is that I can have an idea for a story or about something and have learned how to craft it in a way that connects to people. I don't know where I'd be without writing.
Paul Dore My two pieces of advice for writers comes in at the beginning and near the end. First, when you have an idea, write with abandon. Don't worry about structuring it or where it's going or who's going to read it. Just write it all out. Second, take your time in the editing, that's where all the shaping comes in.
Paul Dore I have just finished up designing the cover and recording the audiobook for a book of stories. They are based on real experiences with a few fictional stories.
Paul Dore I do a lot of walking, and that's where I put things together. I'm not a big - sit down and pound it out - kind of writer. I like to think it through, make notes along the way, and piece it together.
Paul Dore My upcoming book is a series of short stories that I have been compiling for a while. I run a monthly storytelling event and do a fair amount of performing. So, a lot of these stories originated for a live audience. They cover everything from working in Russia at the Olympics to when I broke my nose in a very unusual way to attending a 10 day silent meditation retreat.
Paul Dore I've read everything by David Sedaris and seen him twice in person. He talks a lot about spending hours everyday picking up garbage. It's not necessarily a fictional world, but I'd like to spend the day with him in the English countryside picking up garbage.
Paul Dore A young PhD student is studying the effects of fear reduction when the amygdala is removed from the brain. His studies get shutdown, but he starts conducting his own secret experiments...
Paul Dore The books that are on my reading list this summer are Desmond Cole's The Skin We're In, Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez, Room to Dream by David Lynch and Kristine McKenna, and to see what all the buzz is about with Emily St. John Mandel.
