I have never experienced writer's block. I follow the general advice of the prophet, Anne Lamott, who tells us to write shitty first drafts. Writer's block is a manifestation of either fear or perfectionism or both, and I'm too old to live like that. I sit down. I write. Sometimes what comes out is great, and if it's not, WHO CARES?

My current WIP is a semi-biographical adult novel that chronicles the life of a midwestern family from the 1950s through the 1990s.

I wrote Sister based on our family's experiences as a foster and adoptive family in southern IL. It was part catharsis for me as a writer, part desire to see foster families represented in a picture book, and part correcting misconceptions about how foster care and adoption work.
