(view spoiler)[in the 8th FunJungle book, when the whale explodes, is that based on when, in the 1970s, when the Oregon Department of Transportation blew up a beached whale? (hide spoiler)]
Stuart Gibbs
That incident was an inspiration for the explosion in the book.

I might start a new series some day. The best place to stay aware of what I have coming next is my website: stuartgibbs.com

Thank you. I just hope that if I respond to people kindly, maybe they will start to have some empathy for people who are different than they are.
Stuart Gibbs
One of the wonderful things about books is that they introduce us to people who are different that ourselves and help us build empathy. If you truly respect your gay friends -- or have gay friends at all -- it seems that you ought to be comfortable with their relationships, yes? So why would you not be comfortable with a same-sex relationship in a book?

I would love to have every one of my series turned into a movie or TV show. Sadly, there are no plans to do that for FJ yet.
Stuart Gibbs
I am not planning that at this time.

I hope to have some good news on the SS movie front soon. Check in at stuartgibbs.com for updates
Stuart Gibbs
By my assessment, the SS books are almost entirely mystery and action. I am not sure how much more mystery and action there could be. There has to be at least some character development in a book.
Stuart Gibbs
SS books always come out in late September / early October.
Spy School Goes East will be out on October 6, 2026.

(view spoiler)[(Not too sure if it's a spoiler but I'll mark it anyhow) At the end of SS Blackout, why was there no closing debrief/hint to the next book like you did with all the other ones? (hide spoiler)]
Stuart Gibbs
Because I didn't feel like a redacted debrief was necessary or would make sense at the end of that book.

1. The character on the covers is simply known as 'Spy Guy' at my publisher. He is not a specific character in the books. Merely a representative figure.
2. I hope there will be GNs of all my books some day, but that decision is really up to my publisher, who has to foot the bill for their publication.
3. I plan to do an eleventh FJ book.
4. There will probably not be any more alternative covers in the FJ series.

I wanted become an author because I always loved writing, even when I was young. I have a dog. I come up with the ideas for Charlie Thorne by doing lots of research about the historical figures that I want to write about.
Stuart Gibbs
I think I would be really shocked -- and maybe a bit upset. But it makes sense that I wouldn't be chosen to be the spy. I am probably not cut out for it.
Stuart Gibbs
I probably would have opted to stay home.
Stuart Gibbs
That could be a fun idea for a book, but since I write middle grade, I can;t write a book from the point of view of an adult.

(view spoiler)[Hi Stuart Gibbs, in Spy School 11, what were Ben and his friends trying to say on Crooked island (when the Snodgrass affected them)? And Erica must be proud of Tina Cuevo (“I was wrong! It was amazing! On my very first day, we busted some jerks trying to smuggle a baby tiger into Canada. I saved it’s life—and it was adorable!”) (hide spoiler)]
Stuart Gibbs
Honestly, I don't know what they were going to say. The joke was in their not being able to talk. I wrote SSGN something like four years ago, so I can;t recall everything I was thinking when I wrote it.
But yes, Erica is thrilled about Tina.

There is not going to be a fourth MBA book. Here is why:

Mostly, if I have an idea that excites me for a certain series, then I will write that book,
Stuart Gibbs
My Charlie Thorne series has two books that are set in the Middle East (in part, at least). So I wouldn't want to send the SS series back to that same area. Obviously, the ME is a big region, so there would be more places to send SS. I would love to come and do some more research there (when there is not a war going on).
