Kenneth C. Goldman I asked myself what is one of the most disgusting creatures on the planet. Next to rats, maggots, and cockroaches, I decided on slugs -- then I combined the most repulsive qualities of all of the above and threw in some horrific talents they would have. Once I had the right characters, the story practically wrote itself.

(That eliminates family and close friends who will tell you what they think you want to hear.) A writers' circle or online writers' group is a good start because you're sharing with other writers who probably know their craft better than you do if you're just starting out.
