Michael Nava It was an in-born gift.
Michael Nava I am finishing up my podcast, The Henry Rios Mysteries, which adapts the first novel into an 18-episode audio drama. I am in the process of producing a new Rios novel, Carved in Bone, for publication on October 1, from my own small press, Persigo Press, and I am in the thinking and research stages of a new Rios novel.
Michael Nava Treat it like a job. Most of writing is about discipline rather than inspiration. Also, remember, the only ambition worth having (and the one you're most likely to accomplish) is to become a better writer with each work.
Michael Nava I think most of us have the impulse to create, whether it's a fantastic meal, a garden, or a sculpture. I've been able to channel that impulse into writing.
Michael Nava I've never had writer's block probably because for most of my career as a published writer, I've also been a practicing lawyer. So I never had much time to write and when I did, I had to make the most of it.
Michael Nava Dear Jilles, first I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. Honestly, I set up this account and then it got lost in the press of other social media. I plan to be better about checking this site.

So, thank you for your kind words. I've started my own small press to re-publish slightly revised editions of the existing Rios novels and to publish new books in the series. The first new Rios novel in 20 years, called Carved in Bone, will be released on October 1.

Here's a brief synopsis:
November, 1984. Criminal defense lawyer Henry Rios, fresh out of rehab and picking up the pieces of his life, reluctantly accepts work as an insurance claims investigator and is immediately is assigned to investigate the apparently accidental death of Bill Ryan. Ryan, part of the great gay migration into San Francisco in the 1970s, has died in his flat of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty gas line, his young lover barely surviving. Rios’s investigation into Ryan’s death – which Rios becomes convinced was no accident – tracks Ryan’s life from his arrival in San Francisco as a terrified 18-year-old to his transformation into a successful businessman. What begins for Rios as the search for the truth about Bill Ryan’s death becomes the search for the meaning of Ryan’s life as the tsunami of AIDS bears down on the gay community.
