As a former journalist and a freelance writer, I don't really allow myself to have writer's block. When I don't have an active project I force myself to journal or work on short stories that might never be seen by others. When really pushed I might search for a good writers' prompt website and work through a few paragraphs.
Some days my writing might be some Tweets and Facebook posts or a blog. I don't write new fiction every day, more like three days a week. When I am writing I work long days-- 6 hours or more. On those other days I might be revising or working on marketing.

Read, read, read. Write, write, write. Find other writers and share your work. Define your own measure of success. Will you be satisfied having your work complete? Will you want some small community to read your work? Could you self-publish? Do you want to try traditional publishing?
Have fun.

Final revisions went to my publisher for my first contemporary fiction release. I completed the 'final' draft of a new contemporary novel last week. For the last two years I have been assembling a collection of short stories unified by connection with Door County, WI. My next project will be a memoir of my great-grandmother and our search to discover her family of origin.

I was a journalist at one time and that means I am wired to fill screens with words! When I began creative writing I joined a writing group to provide deadlines and 'pressure'. Today writing is what I do. There is no one answer to this question. Inspiration can come from something as insignificant as a child's shoe at the side of a road, a small newspaper article, a song, something overheard at the grocery.

Leaving Ashwood is the final book in the Ashwood trilogy so the idea was germinated years ago when I started thinking about how would the major nations of the world survive a global depression...and how would that impact regular people.
