I'm guessing that most writers have the experience of waking from a dream and thinking, "That would make a great plot!" But dreams fade quickly and even when they're written down aren't usually as exciting as they were when we experienced them. There have been mysteries in my life for which the only plausible explanation is supernatural, but I wouldn't use those in a book because the fiction I write is fundamentally realist.

I can usually wait it out. That requires a lot of patience, but it usually works. At the moment, I'm waiting for an appearance of serendipity to solve a major problem in the book I'm working on, but have to keep reminding myself that if I keep moving forward without it, it will eventually put in an appearance.

I believe that writers need to have a far-ranging curiosity. As an academic advisor at Ohio Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college, I was always frustrated by young writers who couldn't figure out what classes to take because they weren't interested in taking anything except English courses, and preferably creative writing courses. That didn't bode well for their future as writers, in my book. Much more promising were the young writers who couldn't figure out what classes to take because they wanted to take everything.

Living other lives vicariously! At this point I've lived many lives, seen the world through many sets of eyes, and experienced things I never would have experienced if I hadn't been a writer.

I'm working on a novel that I hope to publish in 2018, BAYOU CITY BURNING.
In the blistering summer of 1961, Harry Lark is running a detective agency out of a seedy office in downtown Houston when a well-dressed mobster entangles him in President Kennedy’s plans to send a man to the moon. His daughter, eleven-year-old Desdemona "Dizzy" Lark, is running a neighborhood lost-and-found out of a suburban garage when she’s hired to find a missing father. Against a backdrop of racial tension and labor unrest, the two cases dovetail as Harry tracks a firebug who is trying to burn down the city. BAYOU CITY BURNING is a mystery based on historical events that asks the question: how does life change for a hard-boiled detective with orthodontist's bills to pay?
