I *am* an aspiring writer, still, but I would say I learned one very important thing: writers write. Sure, they think and talk and blog about writing, but when it comes down to it, they sit down and make words happen.

I find the best thing to do is to take a long walk -- no headphones, no company, just my brains and a a quiet hour or three with enough blood flowing to stimulate the brain. That is my go-to technique.
I also use "cheereaders" -- friends who I trust to keep me motivated. I send them each chapter as it is finished (in first draft form). When I stumble or take too long they big me for the next chapter. It has worked out well thus far.
