Be prepared to hear NO a lot. It takes a lot of NO to get to YES.
Get a thick skin. Writing is subjective and what one person likes another won't. Chances are that someone won't like your writing. Take the constructive criticism and move on.
Learn how to take constructive criticism. Some people just want to HELP you get better. Yeah, your story is your baby, but if there's something wrong you need to acknowledge it so it can be the best story it can be.
A writer has to be a salesman FIRST and an author SECOND. The business side of publishing is TOUGH. Books are the hardest thing to sell out there to a publisher and harder to sell to readers.
